CORK COUNTY HALL

Architect: Shay Cleary Architects
Quantity Surveyor: Bruce Shaw Partnership
Main Contractor: Rohcon

The objective of this project was to architecturally and environmentally upgrade the existing building in sympathy with its format and aesthetic properties.

The overall building consists of the original Tower Block and the new extension (Blocks C & N) on the southern flank of this new L-shaped configuration. The extension is six storeys in height and was done in Schüco FW50+, with Brise Soleil to the southern side of Block N.

A twin skin façade was created for the Tower Block, using a mixture of Schüco FW50 and FW50+S. The outer façade consists of primary vertical mullions, which span from floor to floor in line with the existing structural column grid. Secondary mullions at 1.2m centres support the glass spandrels and louvres. These elements are fixed to the slab perimeters with steel outriggers. This outer façade grid incorporates a glass louvre system. Each louvre blade consists of 16mm laminate glass, supported on aluminum extrusions, which in turn are pivoted on the supporting mullions. Each bank of louvres is automatically controlled by actuators, connected back to the building's BMS with manual override. All moving components are stainless steel with a design life of 25 years.
